Generally, for many, a morning starts with tea and a newspaper. Wait a minute, does it? Talking about the current context, it would rather be appropriate to say that a morning kick starts with facebook update and twitter trends.

Facebook alone is expecting to connect some One Billion Minds later this year as it is set to go public this week, with IPO valuating facebook at nearly $100 billion.  Such enormous has been the craze of social media that the life of the people has changed thanks to the influence of this new strong and rising power.

Established only a few decades back, Social Media have brought major changes around the globe. Even Nepal, which is regarded as slow to adopt innovations, could not remain isolated from the euphoria surrounding the social networking sites.

Campaigns like ‘Nepal Unites’ or ‘Common youth stand up’ showed us that social media have a firm grasp even in our  society. Persons uniting for such events do bring hope and positive attitude against ill aspects of society.

At this point in time, pictures, messages and statuses are being used by people in large numbers inside the social media platforms to raise their voices against Ethnic Federalism, for unified Nepal.

On similar note, Mega Bank CEO Anil Keshary Shah recently urged through his facebook to change last name to ‘Nepal’ , movement for a unified Nepal. This trend is being followed by many supporting this great cause.

The U.S. Ambassador to Nepal, Scott H. DeLisi was often found addressing the current political and social issues through facebook along with information about his tours to different parts of our country.

Former BBC journalist, Sushil Sharma often spices up his news updates with the results of IPL and EPL teams he supports just to lighten things up.

The trend of respectable public figures expressing their take about many issues, giving information and also being a lot closer to the public personally has given social media a power boost to grow larger in our country.  Ashutosh Tiwari, country representative of Water Aid-Nepal, industrialist Rajendra Khetan, journalists Rabindra Mishra and Kunda Dixit, and Anil Shah are only a few names from the list of people having an impact on our society from active social media participation.

From highly controversial political issues, famous social scams or getting to know more about a publicly important figure, social media have served information funtions to an unimaginable extent.

The market of advertisement within these media is growing bigger. The chance to win Rs. 1 lakh, for most liked picture, by Honda Nepal is a hot cake right now. This is one of many competitions where brands are reaching tens of thousands of people, effectively.

The pros are always followed by cons, like cyber-bullying, and cyber-pornography. Social-media obesity is hampering the youths of the nation. Rumors of scams and scandals travel across faster than light affecting the life of the innocents. Then there are morphed images of politicians which go way over the line, which needs strict controlling.

Going haywire about KONY 2012, and later finding out about flawed working of ‘Invisible Children’ and then learning more about co-creator being arrested for masturbating in public, we have almost seen it all to question the authenticity of social media at times.

We have seen how earthquake news travels on these social media faster than the earthquake, or the rain falls on facebook even before a slight thunder above our own heads. Honestly it is the fastest way of getting information but the news has to be properly analyzed to know if it’s the truth or just some made up rumor.

Good or bad, we surely can’t ignore it but only hope to channel it properly for social awareness and awakening. The pros are always followed by cons, like cyber-bullying, and cyber-pornography.
