Researchers suggested that after years of experimenting with different styles and looks, women in their mid-thirties acquired a confidence in their style and image.

One in three women was said to grow more comfortable with their appearance the older they got, while three out of four thought their style improved over the years.

One in 20 went as far as to claim that they did not feel they hit their prime until the age of 56, according to the study by CC, the fashion retailer. However, more than half of women admitted they were guilty of dressing “too young for their age”, with one in five worrying that they looked like “mutton dressed as lamb”.

“It’s encouraging that so many women are more confident and attractive the older they get,” said a spokesman for CC. “Confidence, knowledge and wisdom are crucial when it comes to looking good. You can have all the latest fashion items but if you don’t have the confidence to carry it off the whole look is wasted.”
