India provides assistance for NRs 44.30 million for Chhahari - Single Women Reintegration Center Building at Budhanilkantha Municipality in Kathmandu District

 Indian Ambassador of India, Ranjit Rae laid the Foundation Stone for Chhahari - Single Women Reintegration Center Building on March 7. The Chhahari - Single Women Reintegration Center Building is being built with the Government of India’s financial assistance to the tune of NRs 44.30 million.   The project being implemented by  District Development Committee (DDC), Kathmandu,  GoN,   in consultation and coordination with  the Women for Human Rights Single Women Group [WHR].

Chhahari being one of the core pillars of WHR focuses on rehabilitation and reintegration of vulnerable widows through economic empowerment. WHR, an established organization since 1994, has demonstrated history of working on women’s peace building issues and is ideally positioned at the district levels to work with conflict-affected women and girls. The project will enable the WHR to help raising the status of widows from deprived and depended members to empowered economically independent women. The GoI hopes that the project would surely fulfil the objectives and play pivotal roles in the upliftment of women in Nepal at large. 

Hitherto, 12 other projects have been completed with the Government of India’s assistance worth NRs 273.1 million in the district alone.  Moreover, 10 other projects at a cost of NRs 429.9 million are at various stages.  Additionally, GoI has, in the past, provided 41 ambulances, 03 special Medical Vans and 37 school buses for various organizations from Kathmandu recognizing the need of the people of Nepal and the GoI’s continued commitment to help support the Government of Nepal in its endeavour towards socio-economic developments.  Apart from this Government has also extended financial assistance of approx. NRs 501.53 million towards   renovation, restoration, upgradation of various sites of religious, educational, cultural and historical importance in Nepal during the financial year 2015-2016.

According to a press release issued by Indian Embassy, the India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programme has an outlay of over NRs 76 billion with more than 522 large and small development projects completed or being implemented in almost all the districts of Nepal.  These development projects, mainly in the sectors of education, health and infrastructure development, have been undertaken in response to local needs in partnership with the Government of Nepal.
