Japan provided assistance for the Project for Improving Livelihood of Farmers through Environmentally Harmonizing Agriculture in the Hilly Areas of Sindhuli District

The Government of Japan has decided to extend financial assistance of US Dollars 213,233.00, equivalent to approximately Nepalese Rupees 20,811,540 to GLM Institute under the Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects Scheme.  GLM Institute is a NGO based in Japan and working with Nepalese partner agency Srijansil Welfare Society to implement the Project for Improving Livelihood of Farmers through Environmentally Harmonizing Agriculture in the Hilly Areas of Sindhili District (Two Years).

A Grant Contract relating to this project signed and exchanged on 8th August at the Embassy of Japan between Shuichi SAKAKIBARA, Chargés d’Affaires of Japan to Nepal, and Wakana NISHIYAMA, Project Manager, GLM Institute.

This two year project has, since August 2013, implemented the Project, Improving the Livelihoods of around 600 farmers through Environmentally Harmonizing Agriculture in Kuseswor Dumja VDC of Sindhuli District under Grant Assistance by the Japanese Government. This grant assistance will be used for the 2nd phase of this project.  The major elements of the second phase of this project are Establishment of a Collection & Information Center, Extension of fruits and vegetables cultivation skills, Extension of livestock raising and milk production skills, Extension of soil preservation skills and Establishment of micro-irrigation

According to a press release issued by Japanese Embassy, the money will be used to set up the system for agriculture and livestock production and marketing, GLM plans to construct a Collection & Information Center on the Sindhuri Road and establish a management system through a committee consisting of the representatives from existing farmers’ groups and cooperatives. They will conduct training to the existing cooperatives for capacity development.

 This project will conduct the following trainings: fruits cultivation skills, Japanese mushroom cultivation skills, red beans cultivation skills, vegetable and organic vegetable cultivation skills, and provide agriculture materials for the skills trainings. This project will conduct trainings on disease management for goat raising and nutrition management for livestock, and provide materials for the skills trainings.

This project will provide trainings on vermin-composting, improvement of livestock sheds in order to make liquid compost, and cultivation skills for growing fodder crops along the edge and contour lines of  agricultural land.

This project will construct a micro-irrigation system and give practical trainings in the field in setting up  drip irrigation and in the utilization of the drip irrigation for the vegetables cultivation.

This project is located in Sindhuli District, where the Government of Japan is currently assisting  to construct the Sindhuli Road. The road will be a new alternate route which connects the capital city Kathmandu to the Terai through Sindhuli, making easy access to a large market for the local farmers.

The Japan Embassy expects these projects to create positive synergy for development of the region and livelihood improvement of farmers.
