Indian Embassy and B.P. Koirala India-Nepal Foundation organized 24th edition of Voices on Monday, February 23, 2015 at Nepal-Bharat Library in Nepal Airlines Building, New Road.

Eminent Indian Poet, Manohar Shetty presented a talk on Poetry. Shetty, a noted poet of modern poetry in English literature from India, have been widely published in the US and the UK. His poems have also been translated into languages such as Italian, Finish, German and Slovenian. Shetty has been a Homi Bhaba Fellow and a Senior Sahitya Akademi Fellow.

According to a press release issued by Indian Embassy, during the talk, Shetty shared how, most of his poetry exhibit animal imaginary. He shared, “Animals reflect larger concerns than just the habitat. Perhaps, they can be used strongly as metaphors to talk about our society and humans. I always loved the comparisons D.H. Lawrence made in his poetry with his animal imaginary.”

Shetty then recited some of his well acclaimed poems and shared how his journey to poetry has a lot to do with Goa, where he has now spent thirty years of his life.

He said, “the times have changed. Bombay has now emerged as the most popular hub for poets writing in English. When it comes to modern English poetry, women have outnumbered the men. The poets are doing well both with recognition and remuneration, these days. Thirty years ago, royalty was a farfetched thing to earn out of writing. We rather used to make a group friends chipping in together from our piggy banks to get our poems published.”

Abhay Kumar, Secretary of B.P. Koirala India-Nepal Foundation presented a token of appreciation to Shetty.
