Nepal’s Thirty Schools Received Grants

Thirty schools from different districts of Nepal were awarded £200 grants to carry out individual Social Action Projects as part of the Student Leadership strand under the British Council’s Connecting Classrooms program.

Thirty schools from different districts of Nepal were awarded £200 grants to carry out individual Social Action Projects as part of the Student Leadership strand under the British Council’s Connecting Classrooms program.

According to a press release issued by British Council, the Social Action Projects are student-led initiatives that tackle issues relevant to local communities designed to help young people learn about global themes and become responsible global citizens. This year the Social Action project was organized in partnership with Laxmi Intercontinental Hyundai and in collaboration with Maiti Nepal.

Those Schools, which received award, included the schools from Nuwakot, Dolakha, Sindhupalchowk, Jhapa, Lamjung, Kaski Pharphing, Kavre, Kathmandu and Lalitpur.

 Social Action project for this year was organized in partnership with Laxmi InterContinental Hyundai and in collaboration with Maiti Nepal. The sum were handed over to the representatives of individual school during a Social Action Grant Award Ceremony, organized today by the British Council at Hotel View Bhrikuti, Godavari. These grants were awarded to schools as part of the Student Leadership strand under the British Council’s Connecting Classrooms programme.

Awashis Ojha, Senior Brand Manager of Laxmi InterContinental Pvt. Ltd during the award ceremony expressed his heartfelt congratulations to all the winning 30 schools. 

“We are very pleased to be working collaboratively for the first time with British Council Nepal.  This student led initiative Social Action Project is a very innovative and interesting concept to enhance leadership qualities in the students and moreover introducing social awareness projects in different districts of Nepal is very inspirational. As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility strand we are looking forward to enhance and enrich our partnership with the British Council and Maiti Nepal to bring positive changes in the learning attitude of the studentswho will become socially responsible citizens of the country,” said Ojha

The Social Action Projects are student-led initiatives that tackle issues relevant to local communities, ranging from environmental actions to issues of social justice and drug abuse. These projects help to develop student's leadership and team building skills and also to enhance their understanding of local issues making them committed to change. All the selected schools have shown dedication towards making their projects a success. List of schools and their project is attached with this press release.

Following the announcement of Connecting Classrooms Social Action Project, various schools from different districts of Nepal submitted Social Action Project proposals with the intention to put their ideas into action for the betterment of their local communities in December 2014. The project idea and plans were evaluated by British Council team and Maiti Nepal. Based on the evaluation a total of 30 schools of different districts were also provided a workshop on student voice and leadership and guidance on implementing Social Action Projects on 16-17 March 2015 at Hotel View Bhrikuti, Godavari. The time duration for completion of their projects will be 3 months.
