Rescuers work to free people trapped by a powerful magnitude-7.9 earthquake, which hit capital city  Kathmandu causing extensive damage with toppled walls and collapsed buildings. Some of the nearby town turned into a rubble.

Kathmandu valley’s three major old cities are virtually turned into rubble. Casualty will likely to go up. The report from various parts of Nepal is still coming.

According to Nepal Police, the death toll in Nepal has reached 700. Most of the fatalities that have been reported are in the Kathmandu Valley, though there is little information coming from the outlying areas of the region.

“Hundreds of people are feared dead and there are reports of widespread damage to property. The devastation is not confined to some areas of Nepal. Almost the entire country has been hit,” said Laxmi Prasad Dhakal, spokesperson of Ministry of Home Affairs.

A number of historic buildings have been destroyed. Among those wrecked was the landmark Dharahara tower, with many feared trapped in its ruins. After the earthquake struck, frightened residents came out into the streets. Mobile phones and other communications have been disrupted.

Aftershocks continued to ripple through the region hours after. The quake triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest, with eight people confirmed killed. Others remain missing. "Running for life from my tent. Unhurt. Many many people up the mountain," tweeted mountaineer Alex Gavan.

At least 22 people have been killed in India, officials say, with deaths also reported in Bangladesh. It is the worst earthquake to strike Nepal since one in 1934 which all but destroyed Kathmandu. Reports  said that two people in Bangladesh have died in the earth quake, on top of more than 100 injuries.
