Nepal is hosting eighth international conference on community based adaptation

Eight International Conference on Community Based Adaptation (CBA8) has already opened on 24 April. It will last till April 30. The conference has significant important for Nepal because Nepal is chairing the LDC Group at UN climate change negotiation.

Organized in collaboration with International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), Bangladesh Center for Advanced Studies (BCAS), Clean Energy Nepal (CEN), the Secretariat of Climate Change Network Nepal. The Conference will be inaugurated Prime Minister Sushil Koirala on 27 April and  and Closing Session will be addressed by Deputy Prime Minister Prakash Man Singh and Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change Secretariat Ms. Christiana Figueres. The conference will also be addressed by Jose Maria Clemente SarteSalceda Co-Chair of Green Climate Fund Board,  Mamadou Honadia, Vice Chair of Adaptation Fund Board and Margaret Mukahanana-Sangarwe, Former Chair of UNFCCC Adaptation Committee.

The theme of CBA8 conference is "Financing Local Adaptation". More than 300 participants representing government organizations, NGOs, UN agencies, development practitioners, researchers, academics and other stakeholders from over 50 countries will attend the conference. Conference aims to share and consolidate the latest development in CBA financing, planning and best practices of different countries, sectors and communities.

In a press conference, secretary of Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment Dr. Krishna Chandra Paudel expressed that the government of Nepal is happy to a part of this kind of conference.

According to a press release issued by the organizer, the conference will mainly concentrate on securing finance by mainstreaming adaptation, challenges for funding agencies supporting local adaptation, private sector finance for local adaptation, low-cost options for CBA, accounting for natural capital in CBA, financing adaptation in the LDCs and financing disaster risk reduction and explore pragmatic approaches to financing adaptation which would benefit climate change vulnerable communities in future.

Before the conference, the international participants will have an opportunity to visit different places of Nepal where local adaptation activities are being implemented. The places were selected to showcase the best practices being implemented in the area of riverbank protection, irrigation, plantation, landslide mitigation, community cooperative and farming.

The conference will include 24 technical sessions, which will craft the options to unlock finance for adapting climate change and securing finance for vulnerable communities.

Exhibition stalls, video shows, poster exhibition and other related activities will also be organized during the conference.
