U.S Ambassador Peter Bodde visited Pokhara

U.S. Ambassador to Nepal Peter W. Bodde traveled to Pokhara and met with local government officials, business leaders, NGO representatives, and students. In his meetings with the Chief District Officer and the District Election Officer, Ambassador Bodde was briefed about preparations for the November elections. Ambassador Bodde also opened a new Access program in Pokhara.The English Access Microscholarship Program (“Access”) is designed to help disadvantaged students through a two-year after school program that develops students’ English language and leadership skills. In his remarks to students at the Janapriya Community College, Ambassador Bodde emphasized that during a free election, citizens can vote for the party or candidate of their choice. He said, “Political parties must debate, hold rallies, and make speeches. Candidates and parties must have freedom of speech, assembly, and movement so they can share their views with voters.” The Danish Ambassador to Nepal Kirsten Geelan participated in parts of the program in Pokhara. In her remarks to students, she said, “The cornerstone of a democratic society rests on the rights of the people – irrespective of race, gender and ethnicity – to cast their vote in a free, fair, credible and inclusive election process.”
