Experts believe not implementing Nepal ratified ILO (International Labor Organization) 169 convention will have negative impacts. They said not implementing the political assurance, not cohering with the indigenous people and not taking tribal rights as human rights are the main weaknesses.

Government ratified ILO-169 on Bhadra 5th, 2064. Within one year of ratification of the treaty other laws and practices related to it should have been modified or terminated, then only the treaty is believed to be implemented. Within one year of implementation of treaty, report should be submitted to the ILO’s central office.

At an event organized by the European Union on the World Indigenous People’s Day, UN ILO Program Manager in Nepal Shailendra Kumar Jha said, “We should have submitted the report two years before, since we are late, it shows political parties are not concerned towards indigenous people’s rights.” (Kantipur)
