U.S. Ambassador to Nepal Peter W. Bodde traveled to Birgunj today and met with local government officials, business leaders and NGOs representatives. While in Birgunj, Ambassador Bodde visited USAID’s five year Saath-Saath Project, which provides HIV prevention, treatment, and support services for key populations vulnerable to HIV/AIDS. The project has worked with over 40 local NGOs in 33 districts to help stop the spread of HIV/AIDS. In his meetings with the Chief District Officer and the District Election Officer, Ambassador Bodde was briefed about preparations for the November elections.
In his remarks to the Birgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Ambassador Bodde stressed the need for business leaders to work with political leaders to develop the economy of Nepal to create jobs and opportunities for Nepali citizens. “Free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections are needed to establish the stable democratic government necessary for sustainable economic growth,” he said.
