Andris Piebalgs, European Commissioner for Development, met with the Minister of Finance of Nepal, Shankar Prasad Koirala in Brussels. Commissioner Piebalgs reaffirmed the continuous EU support to Nepal's democratic process, including through the EU Election Observation Mission, which will be deployed for the forthcoming elections. Commissioner Piebalgs announced plans to increase EU's development assistance to Nepal significantly for the period 2014-2020 with a view to bringing added value in three major sectors: integrated rural development, education and governance.
According to a press release issued by the European Union Delegation to Nepal, Minister Koirala stressed the instrumental role of EU support over the years in the political and economic development of Nepal and underlined that Nepal was moving towards more political stability with elections for Constituent Assembly to be held on the 19 November.
