One can see only a few politicians are defending the sacrifices made by a senior police officer SSP Laxmi Neupane, who was killed by a mob, on his duty to safeguard the life and property of the people.

However, half a dozen Constituent Assembly members, including Gagan Thapa, Bhimsen Das Pradhan, Dr. Jagdish Narsing K.C and  Dhan Bahadur Gurung and a few other leaders went to the Human Rights Commission seeking enquiry about the killing of dreaded gangster criminal Kumar Shrestha aka Ghainte in a police encounter.

Gangester Ghainte is reportedly involved in the murder of a couple of individuals and hundreds of other cases of ransom, kidnapping and major crimes.

Known for his close connection with senior political leaders of Nepali Congress, the issue of encounter with Ghainte was even raised in the zero hour of parliament.  However, Ghainte is not the first criminal to receive political backing.

When olice killed another gangster and criminal Chari last year in an encounter, CPN-UML's four parliamentarians representing Dhading district, Rajendra Pandey, Surendra Pandey, Gangalal Tuladhar and Bartaula , came out heavily against the police.

As the nexus between criminals and politicians is growing, there is an increasing threat to the law and order situation. There are still a number of criminals and gangsters who are calling the shot under political protection.

Doing the hard work under a difficult political environment, police officers are fulfilling their duty to save the life of the common people.
