A delegation of the Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development of the German Federal Parliament is visiting Nepal from 22 to 26 March 2016. The delegation is led by Mrs. Dagmar Wöhrl, chairperson of the Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development. The Committee has an instrumental role in shaping Germany’s international cooperation and development agenda.
The focus of the visit of the Parliamentarians is on the situation post-Earthquake and the programs of the German Government to support recovery and rehabilitation efforts in some of the most affected districts of the country.
“In total, the German Government committed 30 million EUR to support the reconstruction of primary health facilities and district hospitals as well as the rehabilitation of local infrastructure and energy supply. In addition, transition and recovery measures including shelter, skills training for reconstruction and livelihood activities are successfully being implemented in close cooperation with the Government of Nepal and local authorities in the districts of Nuwakot, Dhading and Rasuwa,” said a press release issued by German Embassy.
To get a better understanding of current challenges and bilateral cooperation, the German delegation visited Bhaktapur. Germany’s long-standing partnership with the city of Bhaktapur dates back to the Nepal – German Bhaktapur Development Project implemented in the 1970s. A significant amount of the funds provided by the German Government are ear-marked for projects in Bhaktapur, such as the reconstruction of historical heritage sites and the rehabilitation of schools.
A visit to Nuwakot district and discussions with representatives of the National Reconstruction Authority and the Ministry of Finance as well as various meetings with human rights organizations and civil society initiatives will complement the program of the visit.
