The U.S. Embassy brought Sports Envoys Lorrie Fair and Tracy Noonan to conduct an “Empowering Nepali Women through Soccer” program April 2-8. Tracy and Lorrie were members of the U.S. Women’s  National Team that won the 1999 World Cup soccer championship.

During their program, the American Sports Envoys organized soccer clinics, community outreach activities, and scrimmages in Kathmandu and Dhangadhi, Kailali.  In Kathmandu alone, the envoys inspired over three hundred youth, mostly female athletes, through leadership and teambuilding exercises.

“Sports can help you learn about teamwork, goal-setting, performance excellence, and other achievement-oriented behaviors which are critical skills necessary for success,” said Ambassador Alaina Teplitz during their program.  “We hope to see more girls participating in sports in Nepal, and more young female leaders helping improve their communities.”

In Dhangadhi,  the envoys also visited a USAID-funded Community Initiative for Common Understanding (CICU) project in Fulbari VDC of Kailali district, as well as the Dhangadhi American Corner.

“The Sports Envoys are athletes and coaches who travel all over the world to lead programs that engage youth in a dialogue on the importance of leadership and respect for diversity.  SportsUnited manages the Sports Envoy programs, working in cooperation with the U.S. Olympic Committee, U.S. sports federations, and professional leagues,” said a press release issued by Public Affairs Section, Embassy of The United States.
