Government of Nepal commences Emergency School Reconstruction Project officially

Ministry of Education (MoE)is commencing school reconstruction through Emergency School Reconstruction Project (ESRP)in financial assistance from Japan International Cooperation Agency(JICA) with ground breaking ceremony at Shree Kalidevi Higher Secondary School, Pyutar, Lalitpur.

On 19 May 2016, the ceremony will be jointly inaugurated by Secretary of MoE,  Bishwa Prakash Pandit, National Reconstruction Authority (NRA) Expert Dr.Hari Ram Parajuli and Vice President of JICA Mr. Hidetoshi Irigaki. This project targets to rebuild and retrofit schools in the districts severely affected by Nepal Earthquake by financing the necessary expense for reconstruction of schools and related facilities thereby contributing to the improvement of education service and earthquake resilience for sustainable economic growth.

The Project Cost is estimated as 16,522 million Japanese Yen(approximately 132 million USD source AMP,MOF), of which JICA will finance 14,000 million Japanese Yen (approximately 115.3 million USD; source: AMP, MoF).The project will cover 14 districts in collaboration with Asian Development Bank in which JICA will cover Lalitpur, Dhading, NuwakotRasuwaGorkha and Makwanpur. For the 1st batch, out of 120 schools assessed, 84 schools have been identified feasible to start construction in six districts. In Lalitpur, five schools have been selected for construction for 1stbatch by Government of Nepal (Project Implementation Unit PIU,MoE). Shree Mahakali Devi HSS of Bhattedanda, Shree Vidhyadheswori HSS of Ashrang, Jwala Devi PSof Thuladurlung and Pathpradarshak SS of Badhikhelalong with Shree Kalidevi HSS are selected schools under 1st batch.Reconstruction of schools in remaining districts will commence soon within this FY 2072-73.

According to a press release issued by JICA, PIU, implementing agency under MoE is recruiting international consulting firm for 2nd and 3rdbatch school reconstruction that will focus on higher level schools. Detail assessment for 2nd& 3rd Batch will start from next FY 2073-74.

 

Earthquake on April 25th and May 12th 2015 inflicted the huge damage in various section of which 7000schools( source: PDNA) are destroyed and damaged.
