After a last minute political compromise with Dr. Prakash Chandra Lohani, RPP leader Kamal Thapa was finally able to make his way to have absolute control over newly unified party.  Just a day before the elections, Thapa managed to have political deal with RPP stalwart former Prime Minister Lokendra Bahadur Chand and Pashupati Sumsher JBR.

Although his effort to elect unanimously failed, he defeated his nearest rival Pradeep Vikram Rana in a wide margin of over 2500 votes. This proves Thapa's strong hold in the party ranks and files. Even in the elections of central committee members, majority of elected members are loyal to Thapa.

Groomed under infamous Rastrabadi Swatantra Bidhyarthi Mandal, hardcore student wing of erstwhile Panchayat, Thapa's rise in politics is slow but there is no interruption as he pushed his old rivals one after another to reach at the top.

"My first and foremost priority will be to take party united to establish the agenda endorsed by the convention. I don't make any discrimination on the basis of individualism in the party," said Thapa, who is known for his soberness and well cultured.

In two major political changes in Nepal, Thapa was in key positions. In 1990, Thapa, who is also widely read politician, was Minister of Information and Communication. In 2005/06 People's movement, he was minister of home affairs and he was detained under public offense act following the movement.

It took four years to rise in politics after the dissolution of Panchayat system. He held several important portfolios under the government led by Nepali Congress and CPN-UML.

After 2006, it took him for another couple of years to climb in politics. Entered in the politics through RPP-Nepal led by late Rabindra Nath Sharma, Thapa's third round of politics was a bit slow and difficult. He took command RPP-Nepal following the first elections pushing senior leader late Sharma and late Rajeshwor Devkota.  

With full dedications and commitments, Thapa marched his most difficult innings with a slogan of revival of monarchy and Hindu religion. Along with his old colleague Keshar Bahadur Bista, who is now kicked out from RPP, Thapa's RPP-Nepal secured fourth position securing 24 percent seats in Constituent Assembly?   

Former national soccer player, Thapa, who played as a last defense, was also an elected president of All Nepal Football Association. Although he has seen many ups and downs in the political system, nothing prevents former deputy prime minister and foreign minister Thapa to climb in mainstream politics.

At a time when major political parties Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and Maoist Center leaders are yet to accept former King Gyanendra as former head of the state, the party leaders now see Thapa's support is essential to survive in the power.

The presence of leaders of major political parties including prime minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Nepali Congress leader Sher Bahadur Deuba and CPN-UML leader K. P. Sharma Oli and leaders of other parties at RPP convention showed that Thapa's party has now increased its acceptance in main stream politics.    

As Nepal has been passing through a major political turmoil following the announcement of local election, how the jubilant unified RPP under the leadership of Thapa remains to be seen particularly the agenda of monarchy and Hindu state.
