The next generation of the royal dynasty were more severe for the citizens in mixed marriages. King Mahendra and his Queen, Ratna, appreciated that ex-pats brought with them skills they could pass on and they were skills Nepal could use. Today I suppose with so many going abroad to study, the received wisdom might well be that ex-pats are no longer a necessary fabric of Nepal’s demography.

We are now close to Dasain and it would be wonderful if we could claim that with goddess Durga’s help and blessings this scourge has been eradicated from the towns, cities, villages and fields of our land. There’s a fallacy that certain women by their behaviour, clothing etc, want to be raped.

Monkeys’ reputations are maybe a tad exaggerated but they certainly get up to all kinds of tricks. They ere infamous for ruining wedding cakes, for example, Unable to find culprits for petty thefts and for moving people’s shoes the monkeys shoulder the blame!Not that they show the least remorse for it.

Fortunately, the 21st century has been quite nifty at replacing the real on the ground spying with cyberspace equivalents and governments/companies/researchers/can spy by handing the job over to computer whizzes who don’t even have to consider how much hurt or damage they inflict because it’s all by proxy, Orwell’s 1984 comes to mind with Big Brother ever watching from a giant television screen.

The other theory I have; and try this one for size, is that if a nation has been on the world’s dislike list for a couple of thousand years then its people tend to hone their skills, work harder, groom their intelligence, produce a fair number of geniuses (e.g. Einstein, Marx and Bettelheim) and after that they survive.
